Red Devils Defeat Johnson County

The Allen Men's Basketball team got back in the win column with a tough road victory at Johnson County on Saturday afternoon. Both teams entered the contest with just 1 conference loss. The Red Devils and Cavaliers took a little time to settle in as both teams struggled gaining any offensive rhythm in the early going. The Cavaliers were able to string together a few transition baskets off of Allen turnovers which gave Johnson a 10-point advantage midway through the half. Trevian Sylvester would knock down a long range 3-pointer to help stop the Cavalier run. Allen would cut the deficit to just 5 points at the halftime break 23-28. Allen struggled converting a lot of close range shots in the first half, and only went 1-11 from the 3-point line in the half.

In the early going of the second Allen would regain the lead after a Chris Dixon 3-point attempt. From there the teams would go back and forth as neither team was able to take a sizeable advantage. Near the 5 minute mark the Red Devils trailed Johnson County by 1-point. Nick Whittick converted at the rim and Ahmed Mahgoub also made a tough runner to regain the lead for Allen. The Red Devils would go on a 9-0 run late in the game, and Allen would convert a few free-throws to seal the tight victory.

Allen was led in scoring by Nick Whittick with 19 points. Whittick also grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. Whittick's defense was also tremendous as he was all over the floor and helped Allen hold Johnson to just 33% from the floor for the game. Ahmed Mahgoub also reached double figures with 10 points. Chris Dixon scored 8 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for Allen.

Allen is now 17-6 overall on the season and 6-1 in the KJCCC standings. The Red Devils will now begin playing the second round of conference games. Allen and KCK are both 6-1 and are atop the league standings. The Red Devils were ranked #19 in the country in the latest NJCAA D2 poll.

The Red Devils will head to Parsons, KS on Wednesday to take on the Labette Cardinals at 7:30 pm.
