Allen Defeats Cloud at Buzzer

The Allen Men's Basketball team defeated Cloud County in Concordia on Wednesday night by the score of 72-70. The T-Birds would control the early going, but after their slow start the Red Devils would go on to control most of the first half. Allen would connect on 5 of 12 three point attempts in the first half, and took a 8 point lead into the halftime break (36-28). 

In the early going of the second half the Red Devils would push their lead to double digits as Cloud struggled against Allen's full court pressure. Allen created several turnovers for easy points. It appeared as though Allen was about to run away with the game, but Cloud hung tough and went on a huge run at the midway point of the second half. 

Cloud stormed all the way back took a 5 point advantage with just a few minutes to play. Allen would settle back down, and Ed Wright sank a huge 3 to pull Allen within 2 points. The Red Devils got a defensive stop, and Freddie Word got fouled on the ensuing possession. Word knocked down both free throws to tie the game up. 

In the final minutes Allen had a 2 point lead and a chance to extend it, but Tyren Shelley missed on a mid-range jumper. Cloud quickly scored a transition layup to tie it up at 70-70. Cloud would also get another stop with 45 seconds left, and had a chance to take the lead. With 13 seconds left Cloud missed a short runner and Allen got the rebound and called timeout. 

With under 10 seconds to go Freshman point guard Nick Whittick used a high ballscreen and got to the rim and banked in the eventual game winner with 1.8 seconds remaining. 

Cloud would have a last second 3 that banked off the backboard and fell off the rim which snapped Allen's losing streak. 

Ed Wright led the way in scoring for Allen with 15 points on 3-8 from the 3 point line. Freddie Word chipped in 14 points, and Amadou Traore recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Next up Allen will host Independence on Monday night.
