Allen Loses Heartbreaker

The Allen Men's Basketball team lost their home opener Wednesday night on a last second buzzer beater from Labette. The final score was 70-67 in favor of the Cardinals. In the early going the Allen defense struggled to get any stops, as Labette made some tough shots at the rim and connected on several long range 3's. The Cardinals led by as many as 10 in the first half, but the Red Devils would fight back and go on a 10-0 run to tie the game up near the end of the first half. Labette would go on to have a 3 point halftime lead by the score of 40-37.

The second half was much better on the defensive end for the Red Devils, but the offense sputtered out. The second half saw many lead changes and neither team could extend a lead to more than 2 possessions for the majority of the half. Every time the Red Devils would tie the game or take a 1 point lead a turnover would follow and give the momentum right back to the Cardinals. Labette held a 2 point lead in the final minute, but Allen got a defensive stop and Freddie Word went coast to coast for a game tying runner with 13 seconds in the game. All notted up at 67 with 13 seconds left Allen's defense had a breakdown and gave an open look to Labette's Ghage Kennan who made his 5th 3 pointer of the game with 2 seconds left to give Labette a 3 point edge.

Allen executed their last second play , but Ed Wright stepped out of bounds and the game ended giving Labette the close win. In the end Allen's mistakes hurt them late in the game. Allen was led in scoring by freshman power forward Ahmed Mahgoub who scored 19 points on 6-10 from the field. Mahghoub also grabbed 9 rebounds. Freddie Word was Allen's only other player in double digits with 13 points. Allen will look to bounce back on Saturday as they host Fort Scott at 4:00 PM.
