Academic Team of the Year Awards announced

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The most successful NJCAA programs in the classroom this year were recognized Wednesday with the announcement of the 2015-16 NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year.

A total of 27 teams - 14 men's and 13 women's - were honored for accumulating the highest GPA in their respective sport while meeting the minimum 3.0 requirement.

The highest GPA in the nation belonged to the Daytona State (Fla.) women's golf team who compiled a 3.90 average. The Falcons also claimed the highest GPA on the men's side with a 3.62 from the baseball team.

This year, there were five colleges that tied for the most awards. Allen County (Kan.), Daytona State, Dodge City (Kan.), Iowa Central and Suffolk County (N.Y.) each had two teams receive recognition for their academic excellence.

Kansas claimed the most awards as eight teams from the Sunflower State garnered Academic Team of the Year honors. Florida, Iowa and New York tied for the second-most with three teams topping the academic rankings, while Michigan and Mississippi each boasted two.

Beyond the 27 teams honored with the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year Award, a record 687 programs - 211 men's and 476 women's - earned honorable mention recognition by assembling a 3.0 GPA or higher.
